CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up a combined four wins in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association action last weekend.

The wins improves the women’s ‘Canes record to 10-2, good for second place behind  Mount Saint Vincent, while the men go to a league-leading 13-1.

Both squads return to the court Saturday hosting Mount Saint Vincent at the Eastlink Centre as part of Basketball Day on P.E.I. Games time are 1:30 p.m. for the women and 3:30 p.m. for the men.

Women

Sunday

Hurricanes 64, Mystics 57

The women trailed 12-8 after the first quarter against  Mount Saint Vincent and 32-29 at the half but fought back for 47-44 lead after the third and won the fourth quarter for the seven point win. 

Jayla Verney led the ‘Canes in scoring with 15 points and nabbed seven rebounds.

Ty’Keia Beals added 14 points, while Lexi MacInnis chipped in 10 points and Breauna Rivoli-Johnson scored nine points and dished out five assists.

Saturday

Hurricanes 72, Seawolves 63

The ‘Canes led 24-18 after the first quarter versus UNBSJ and would then take each of the remaining three quarters by a point for the nine-point win. 

MacInnis led the way with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Verney drained 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds.. 

Kendra Craswell came up big off the bench with 13 points and three steals.

Sunday

Hurricanes 93, Mount Allison 87

Versus the Mounties, the ‘Canes trailed 24-22 after one quarter but took a slim 43-42 lead at the half. Then the squad extended the lead by a point in the third to lead 69-67 before winning the final quarter 24-20. 

Marcus Dawkins poured in a game-high 27 points along while Jace Colley added 16 points and seven rebounds. Chase Bowden and Jalen King each chipped in 10 points. 

Saturday

Hurricanes 110, Seawolves 52

The ‘Canes used a 20-0 run to run out to a 26-5 first-quarter lead against UNBSJ and never looked back. The ‘Canes extended the lead to 59-18 at the half and 89-33 after three quarters. 

Antonio Kostakos came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19 points while Roosevelt Whyley led all starters with 15 points and had 12 rebounds. Whyley eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark with the Hurricanes (regular season and playoffs) in the third quarter. 

Other players to reach double digits were Michael Kayeye (14 points), Dawkins (13), Colley (11) and King (13).
