CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s soccer teams had a tough weekend in New Brunswick, going a combined 1-2-1 in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association action in Saint John and Fredericton.
On the women’s side, Holland College downed the UNBSJ Seawolves 1-0 Saturday but lost 3-1 to the St. Thomas Tommies on Sunday, while the men drew 0-0 with the Seawovles on Saturday then lost to St. Thomas 2-0 on Sunday.
The Hurricanes women sit 4-2 and third place in the ACAA standings behind St. Thomas (5-0-1) and Mount Saint Vincent (4-1-1).
The Holland College men (4-1-1) remain in first place over Mount Saint Vincent (3-1-2), St. Thomas (3-1-2) and King’s College (3-1-1).
Both ‘Canes squads face Mount Saint Vincent Saturday in Halifax, N.S. The games have 2 p.m. start times.

Sunday
Tommies 3, Hurricanes 1
The Hurricanes fell behind early in the first half on the Tommies Nikita McCartney’s first of two goals in the game as she opened the scoring in the 16th minute.
That stood until McCartney’s second in the 60th minute. The ‘Canes Kathrine McEwen scored 19 minutes later, but Louisa Hughes added an insurance marker in the 83rd minute.

Hurricanes 1, Seawolves 0
Striker Nicole Fergusson broke a scoreless first half tie in the 63rd minute, giving the Hurricanes the edge and it was all the Hurricane needed as goalkeeper Hailey Terstege was solid and recorded the shutout.

Sunday
Tommies 2, Hurricanes 0
Both keepers were busy as Brandon Lund stopped nine shots and George Tzimas nabbed seven chances, but the Tommies goalminder had help from scores by David Effong and Kyle Yearwood and earned the shutout victory.
Saturday
Hurricanes 0, Seawolves 0
Holland College fired six shots at UNBSJ keeper Luke Watson while Lund saw one shot come his way in the scoreless tie.
