Rachel Colle had two power-play goals and an assist Saturday to pace the UPEI Panthers to a 7-2 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey action.
The Panthers scored five unanswered goals in the third period to improve to 2-3-0 while the Mounties are winless in five games.
Kaylee Dufresne scored the winner 3:17 into the third period. Faith Steeves added two power-play goals while Jessie Brown added another with the man advantage and captain Emma Martin scored an even-strength goal.
Dufresne and Shelby Foran each had two assists while singles went to Tyler Way, Martin, Sydnee Baker, Leah Byrne and Jenna Pellerin.
Jessica Campbell gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first period just after a Panthers power play ended. The shots at the time were 12-2 for UPEI. The lead held up through the first period.
Colle scored twice in the second before Mermaid’s Maddy Koughan scored the equalizer with 1:46 left in the period to send the teams to the third tied 2-2.
Andrea Dinan, Morgan Porter and Abby Beale had assist for the Mounties.
Camille Scherger made 10 saves for the win while Keri Martin stopped 40 shots in the loss.
UPEI was 5-for-9 on the power play and killed all three of Mount Allison’s chances.
The Panthers play the St. Thomas Tommies today in Fredericton, N.B., at 2 p.m.
SUNDAY
The news wasn’t so good on Sunday as St. Thomas handed UPEI at 6-0 defeat.
Lauren Henman had a hat trick, including one on the power play. Lauren Legault, Danielle Ring and Becky Conner had the other Tommies goals. Scherger made 12 saves in net for the Panthers while Abby Clarke posted the shutout for STU.
UPEI outshot the Tommies 24-18.
The Panthers look to extend their win streak to three games when they travel to Fredericton to take on the St. Thomas Tommies on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
