KENSINGTON – The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild is still alive.

The Wild play a meaningful game Saturday on the final day of round-robin play at the Atlantic major midget hockey championship after a 5-2 win over the P.E.I.-champion Charlottetown Mark’s Work Wearhouse Islanders on Friday night.

The Wild will take a 2-1-0 record into Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. showdown with Nova Scotia’s Newbridge Academy Gladiators (2-0-1).

New Brunswick’s Moncton Flyers (1-0-1) plays the St. John’s Maple Leafs (0-3-0) from Newfoundland and Labrador at 9:30 a.m., and the Islanders (1-2-0) at 3:30 p.m.

The top two teams after round-robin play meet in Sunday’s championship game at 1 p.m.

The key point in Friday night’s game came late in the second period when the Wild struck for two goals 11 seconds apart before an estimated crowd of 700 fans. With a delayed penalty being called against the Islanders, Spencer Sherren capped off a Wild rush at 17:37 to make it 2-1.

At 17:49, Chasse Gallant picked up a bouncing puck during a scramble in front of Charlottetown goaltender Noah Laybolt, made a move to his right and went upstairs just under the cross-bar to bring the Kensington fans to their feet.

Gallant, who also added an assist and was named the Wild’s player of the game, netted his second goal of the evening at 6:02 of the third period to give Kensington a little breathing room after some good work forechecking by linemates Brodie MacArthur and Kyle Pinksen. Gallant moved into the slot off the left wing, and made no mistake going upstairs under the cross bar.

Pinksen added an insurance marker late in the third period, and Shawn Corney scored in the game’s final minute for the Islanders.

Blake Jamieson’s short-handed goal opened the scoring for the Islanders 3:03 into the second period. The goal came four seconds into a Wild power play, and came right off a faceoff in the neutral zone just outside the Kensington blue-line. Jamieson’s shot went off the far post to the stick side of Wild goaltender Bradley Shea.

Logan Toole tied the game for the Wild at 10:55 as he walked in from the blue-line and scored high off the iron as well.

Both goaltenders turned in solid performances. Laybolt, who made 39 saves in a 2-0 loss to Newbridge Academy on Friday morning, was the busier of the two as the Wild outshot the Islanders 34-24 overall, including a 24-15 margin through the first two periods.

The winning team will represent the Atlantic region at the Telus Cup Canadian midget hockey championship in Riviére-du-Loup, Que., from April 20 to 26.
