UPEI Panthers to hold benefit hockey game for McGuigan family

None

MONTAGUE – A charity hockey game to assist in the tragedy endured by a local family this past summer will see Atlantic university hockey invade eastern P.E.I.’s largest town this weekend.

The UPEI Panthers will play the Dalhousie Tigers in a regular season game Saturday night that will see all proceeds go to the McGuigan family who recently suffered a double tragedy.

“The UEPI hockey team is hoping to become the Island’s hockey team and are doing a great effort by spreading the region’s greatest hockey with everyone across the province,’’ said promoter Dennis King during a press conference Friday.

The 7 p.m. Nov. 22 game will be held at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre and marks the first university level game to be featured here.

“It’s great to get the Panthers to participate in this fundraiser,’’ said town councillor Jim Bagnall. “And yes, I seldom miss a home game.”

The game proceeds will go to the families of the late Herbert Brenton McGuigan and his son, the late Brendon Patrick McGuigan. The father and son were shot in their St. Mary’s Road home last August.

“What could be more Prince Edward Island than a community hosting a hockey game to rally around an innocent family that has suffered such a tragedy,” said Panther coach Forbes MacPherson.

The entire Panther team turned out for the press conference here Friday as the team was bound for a game in Antigonish.
