FREDERICTON – The UNB Varsity Reds handed the UPEI Panthers their second straight loss to open the 2018-19 Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey schedule on Friday night.

Joe Gatenby’s power-play goal at 6:41 of the third period broke a 3-3 tie, and sent the Varsity Reds to a 4-3 win before 2,388 fans at the Aitken University Centre.
It was the regular-season opener for UNB while the Panthers opened with a 4-3 loss at home to the Moncton Blue Eagles on Wednesday.
Cameron Brace (1-1), Stephen Anderson of Morell and Kris Bennett also scored for UNB, coached by Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall.
Kameron Kielly of Charlottetown and Gabe Guertier led the Panthers each with a goal and an assist. Cody Payne added a single marker.
UNB led 2-1 after the first period and opened up a 3-1 advantage in the middle frame, before UPEI rallied to tie the game 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Rylan Parenteau made 19 saves in earning the goaltending win. Simon Hofley faced 37 shots in UPEI’s net.
The Panthers’ next game is at home against Moncton on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m.
