FREDERICTON – The UNB Varsity Reds are now 2-for-2 against the UPEI Panthers this season.
The Varsity Reds, coached by Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall, defeated the visiting Panthers 6-2 on Saturday night to improve to 4-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) in the Atlantic University Sport Men’s Hockey Conference. UPEI dropped to 2-2-0.
Before 2,473 fans at the Aitken University Centre, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Varsity Reds scored the only three goals of the middle frame to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Christopher Clapperton (2-1), former Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capital and Morell native Stephen Anderson (1-1), Oliver Cooper (1-1), Mark Simpson and Matt Murphy lit the lamp for the Varsity Reds, who also defeated the Panthers 5-3 in Charlottetown on Oct. 4.
Charlottetown native Kameron Kielly (1-1) and Marcus Power answered for UPEI.
The Varsity Reds held a 46-17 shots-on-goal advantage. Overall, UNB has outshot UPEI 97-29 in the two head-to-head meetings this season.
Rylan Parenteau earned the goaltending win, and Matt Mahalak was between the pipes for the Panthers.
