The UPEI Panthers men's hockey season is over after a 3-1 defeat to St. F.X. in Atlantic University Sport playoff action Friday in Charlottetown.

St. F.X. swept the best-of-three quarter-final 2-0 in front of 1,056 spectators at MacLauchlan Arena.

The Antigonish, N.S., school had taken the first game 4-2 on Wednesday in Antigonish.

Friday, the X-Men jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Kristof Kontos at 5:21, assisted by Eric Locke, then by Locke 13 minutes later near the end of period.

Michael Kirkpatrick and Trey Lewis tallied assists on the second marker.

Neither goal was on the power play despite two penalties on the Panthers in the frame.

St. F.X. did connect on a power play almost 14 minutes into the second period, thanks to Blake Gall's goal 21 seconds into a holding-the-stick penalty on UPEI's Darcy Ashley.

But the Panthers recovered and closed the gap to 3-1 on a goal by Brent Andrews two minutes later. Ashley and Marcus Power drew assists.

In the third, the Panthers outshot St. F.X. 11-4 and had a power-play chance but couldn't solve X-Men goalie Drew Owsley.

Mavric Parks suffered the loss in goal for UPEI, which outshot St. F.X. 41-24 overall.

UPEI had 14 minutes in penalty while St. F.X. had 10 minutes.

St. F.X. moves on to the semifinals against UNB or Acadia depending on the winner of today's deciding Game 3 in the other quarter between Saint Mary's and Moncton in Halifax, N.S.
