FREDERICTON, N.B. – The UNB Varsity Reds thumped the UPEI Panthers 8-1 Friday in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action.

The Reds scored six goals in the second period.

Christopher Clapperton had two goals and an assist to pace the attack for the home side. Dyan Willick, Matt Murphy, Peter Trainor, Chris Caissy, Cam Brace and Morell’s Stephen Anderson each added a goal and an assist.

Tyler Boland had three assists.

Marcus Power scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game 1-1 three minutes into the second period. Sam Aulie had the assist.

Alex Dubeau made 26 saves for the win while Connor Wilkinson allowed seven goals on 32 shots in 40 minutes for the Panthers. Matt Mahalak made 12 saves on 13 shots in relief.

UNB, which held 1-0 and 7-1 period leads, improved to 13-0-2 while UPEI has lost three straight and are 4-11-1.

The Panthers complete the first half with road games on Dec. 1 at Acadia and Dec. 2 at Saint Mary’s.
