CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Former Charlottetown Islanders right-winger Daniel Sprong has signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The deal, which is worth $750,000 annually, was announced on Monday.
Sprong, 21, scored 32 goals this season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to finish tied for second in the AHL. The Amsterdam native had 65 points in 65 games and added two goals and an assist in eight NHL games with Pittsburgh.
The Islanders selected him in the first round of the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft. He scored 30 goals and recorded 68 points in his rookie season before improving to 39 goals and 88 points in his 68-game sophomore season.
The Penguins selected him in the second round (46th overall) in 2015 and he started the season in the NHL as an 18-year-old before returning to the Isles at Christmas time.
His final season in Charlottetown was 2016-17, when he returned from off-season shoulder surgery to score 32 goals and record 59 points in 31 games.
