Prince Edward Island's hockey team is getting ready for its opening contest of the Canada Games in Prince George, B.C.
The team was delayed leaving Charlottetown on Saturday and didn’t get into the athletes’ village until the wee hours of Sunday morning. After a few hours of sleep, they hit the ice for a short skate in preparation for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. Pacific game with Yukon.
“We’re excited,” head coach Luke Beck said after practice. “It’s been a long two years with all kinds of different practices, tournaments and meetings. It’s finally nice to be here and get the first skate out of the way.”

Summerside native Carson MacKinnon is the team’s captain. He is playing his second season with the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox, Sask.
“It’s going to be a fun experience with a great group of guys and I am really looking forward to it,” he said. “We’re in this tournament as an underdog, so it’s going to be important to set the tone early.”
The assistant captains are Summerside’s Jeremy McKenna and North Rustico’s Carson MacManaman.
Elmsdale’s Luke Oliver will start in goal tonight while St. Peter’s Bay’s Noah Laybolt gets the call on Monday.
