A new era of the Atlantic Challenge Cup begins today in Moncton.
Today to Monday, 320 of the best young hockey players in Atlantic Canada will converge on the Tim Hortons 4 Ice Centre looking for an Atlantic championship and the opportunity to be noticed by the large number of scouts who will be in attendance.
Moncton will host the event for the next four year.
Provincial under-15 and under-18 female and under-15 and under-16 male teams from New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. will compete in the round-robin event.
Hockey P.E.I. will have officials working games at the tournament.
Officials selected for the under-15 and under-18 female championships are referee Valerie Vuillemot (Charlottetown) and linesmen Lisa Cameron (Cornwall) and Ellen Dixon (Cornwall).
Officials selected for the under-15 and under-16 male championships are referee Ryan Power (Charlottetown) and linesmen Jeff Herron (Charlottetown) and Jackson Doughart (Kensington).
The tournament is the culmination of the high performance programs in each of the provinces.
In most cases, the provincial development process began in April and concludes with the Atlantic Challenge Cup.
The Atlantic Challenge Cup has been in existence since 1996, when the event was first hosted in Sydney, N.S.
