Bedeque’s Gardiner MacDougall has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

MacDougall has the most wins in UNB men’s hockey team history.

“This is a very special award and presentation and I am indeed honoured and humbled to be recognized in such a fashion — it is certainly a highlight for my family and for our entire group of V Red Nation supporters,” said MacDougall.

During MacDougall’s 12 years with the Varsity Reds he led them to the national tournament seven times, winning three times and finishing second twice.

He is a three-time Atlantic university coach of the year and was named national coach of the year in 2010. He was a member of the 2007 AUS World University Games gold medal winning team and will lead the Atlantic men’s hockey team as they compete in the winter Universiade in Italy in December 2013.

“Gardiner has made a lasting mark in our province. He has an outstanding team of staff and volunteers who help with the success of the UNB hockey program,” said Jack Carr, the MLA for New Maryland-Sunbury West who nominated MacDougall for the honour.

“He lifts up everyone he has a relationship with. The lives he has shaped in a positive way both professionally and personally probably could never be fully measured."

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
