Panthers gain two big points with shootout win against X-Men

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Cody Payne scored the shootout winner Friday as the UPEI Panthers defeated the St. FX X-Men 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action at MacLauchlan Arena.

Payne and Beau McCue scored in regulation with assists going to Chad Labelle and Brent Andrews.

Santino Centorame on the power play and Matt Needham replied for St. FX. Kristoff Kontos, Jagger Dirk and Bryson Cianfrone had the helpers.

Matthew Mancina made 28 saves in regulation and stopped all four X-Men shooters in the shootout. Chase Marchand made 29 saves in the loss.

The X-Men led 1-0 after the first period and the game was tied 1-1 heading to the third.

UPEI improved to 5-13-1 while St. FX drops to 15-1-3.

The Panthers host the Dalhousie Tigers (2-15-1) tonight at 7 p.m.
