Charlottetown resident David Ling appears to be heading for the Rock.
The defending Herder Memorial Trophy champion C.B.N. Eastlink CeeBee Stars are attempting to add the former St. John’s Maple Leafs player to their roster for the 2013-14 Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey League season.
CeeBees coach Ian Moores told The Telegram Thursday night Ling hasn’t signed a Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador card yet, although he sounded optimistic the veteran winger will eventually comply.
It looks as if it’s only a matter of dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s.
“I don’t know what to say. We’ve spoken, but he’s not on a card yet,” said Moores. “I don’t like counting my chickens until they hatch, but all indications are that he has agreed to play with us. We anticipate signing him.
“I’m surprised that the word is out there already because I only spoke to him (Thursday),” added Moores. “Things can change in this world, although I hope they don’t in this case.”
Moores said if Ling agrees to play with the CeeBees it would be an “exciting addition.”
The 38-year-old forward played this past season for the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) in the United Kingdom where he put up 89 points on 34 goals and 55 assists to lead the league. He also rang up 144 penalty minutes in 57 games.
Ling, 38, who spent two seasons with Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL (2002-03 and 2003-04), skated with the St. John’s Maple Leafs during the 2004-2005 AHL season.
He also played a couple of games with the Montreal Canadiens in 1996-97 as well as several other AHL clubs in his career which also included a brief stint in the KHL three years ago.
The league begins Nov. 1.
