TIGNISH – The Southside Lynx widened their lead over the Tignish Perry’s Construction Aces on Sunday night.
The Lynx defeated the Aces 5-2 at the Tignish Credit Union Arena to open up a five-point bulge between the two teams in the race for second place in the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League.
Drew Grady (1-1), Tyson Beckingham (1-1), Kyle McGuigan (1-1), Nathan Paynter and Ryan Beckingham scored for the Lynx, who improved to 15-7-1 (won-lost-overtime losses). Jarrett Mulligan (2), Rourke Perry, Nick VanderVelden and Brady VanderVelden chipped in with assists.
Drake Smallman netted both goals for the Aces (12-6-2). Brayden Handrahan and Dawson Sellick earned helpers.
There was no scoring in the opening period, and the teams went into the final 20 minutes tied 2-2.
Paynter’s goal 51 seconds into the third period broke the tie, and the score remained 3-2 until Tyson Beckingham added an insurance goal with 2:29 remaining. McGuigan then sealed the win with an empty-net goal with one second showing on the clock.
Sean MacPhee earned the goaltending win, and Bradley Shea was between the pipes for Tignish.
