Major midget team hosts home opener Saturday

KENSINGTON – The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild completed a busy weekend on a winning note.

After opening the 2018-19 New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League regular season with a 6-4 road loss to the Saint John Vitos on Friday night, the Wild hosted Newbridge Academy from Dartmouth, N.S., in an exhibition doubleheader at Credit Union Centre in Kensington. The Wild overcame a slow start to post a 9-3 win on Saturday night, and prevailed 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Wild’s next action is their regular-season home opener on Saturday, when the Northern Moose from Bathurst, N.B., visit Kensington for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Wild 4 Newbridge Academy 1
Rookie Duncan Picketts had a goal and an assist to lead the Wild, who received single goals from Landon Clow, Simon Hughes and Kalib Snow. Keiran Gallant (2), Ethan Reilly and Isaac Wilson chipped in with assists.
Cole MacLaughlin’s third-period goal spoiled the shutout bid of Wild goaltender Chad Arsenault.
Kensington held period leads of 3-0 and 4-0.

After trailing 2-1 after the first period, the Wild scored five unanswered second-period goals to take a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Hughes (2-2), Zach Biggar (1-2), Clow (1-1), Gallant (1-1), Zac Arsenault (1-1), Reilly, Lucas Parsons and Reid Peardon dented the twine for Kensington.
Jeremy Duguay, Nathan Gagne and Dawson Crane answered for Newbridge Academy.
Winning goaltender was Josh Smith.
