Islanders fall in overtime to Screaming Eagles

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Giovanni Fiore was the overtime hero Saturday as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Charlottetown Islanders 4-3.

Kevin Mandolese stopped 54 shots in the win while Matthew Welsh made 37 saves for the home side.

Adam Marsh scored twice for the Islanders while Francois Beauchemin also found the back of the net as the Islanders flew out of the gate Saturday at the Eastlink Centre. They took a 2-0 lead 4:11 into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game and held a 10-2 shot lead five minutes into the contest.

Jordan Ty Fournier cut the lead in half with a power-play goal with 29 seconds to go in the first period and Phelix Martineau tied it 1:11 into the second period.

Fournier scored his second of the game to tie the contest 3-3 with about five minutes to play on a breakaway.

Fiore, Olivier LeBlanc, Alexis Sansfacon, Massimo Carozza and Martineau had assists for Cape Breton while Beauchemin and Kameron Kielly had helpers for the Islanders.

Charlottetown was 1-for-3 on the power play while Cape Breton was 1-for-4.

Beauchemin and Marsh were both acquired in a trade with Val-d’Or Wednesday and were playing their second game with their new club on Saturday.

Cape Breton improved to 23-15-2-1 while the Islanders fall to 24-13-2-0 as Cape Breton takes three of four weekend points in Charlottetown.

The Islanders return to action Wednesday when they travel to Halifax to play the Mooseheads at 7 p.m.
