CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Holland College Hurricanes swept the Acadia Axewomen in back-to-back home games during the weekend in Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League action.
The ‘Canes won 6-0 Saturday and 4-2 on Sunday.
The Hurricanes used a big first period, which included two power-play goals, to take a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission on Saturday. Jess Redmond, Annika Mason and Sam Higgins scored the goals. Katie-Lynn Cummiskey, Katie Parkman and Higgins scored in the second to round out the scoring.
Mackenzie Koughan recorded the shutout.
Sunday’s game would be much more competitive, with Hilary Dort giving the Axewomen a 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Higgins from Katelyn Dunn and Redmond tied the game in the second.
With 13:09 remaining, Nicole Gallant would give the ‘Canes the 2-1 lead after her point shot was deflected. Parkman extended the lead two minutes later while Dunn made it 4-1 with 7:38 remaining. Maddie Bourque scored with 6:09 remaining for Acadia.
Kara Mason picked up the win.
The ‘Canes (3-1) have road games coming up versus UNB Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in Fredericton, N.B.
