The new Holland College Hurricanes women's hockey coach is the same as the old one.

Ryan Maxwell already has a head coaching stint with women's team under his belt in 2010, but has worked as an assistant with the men's hockey team the last four seasons.

Maxwell takes over for outgoing bench boss Nick Miller, who's returning to Newfoundland and Labrador for employment reasons.

Maxwell said he's ready for the challenge of developing a collegiate hockey program.

"I look forward to the opportunity to coach the women's hockey team. I was very impressed with their chemistry last season," said Maxwell in a release. "I hope to build on that next season and continue to grow the program."

The 'Canes finished last (1-10-1) in the Eastern Canadian Women's Hockey League last season and hosted the league championship where it went 1-3.

Teams in the circuit also include the University of New Brunswick, Acadia University (last year's champ) and Cape Breton University.

The men's Hurricanes dropped out of the Island Junior Hockey League for 2015-16 to focus on recreational activities that will allow for more participation among college students.

So Maxwell became the top candidate for the vacant head coach position, said Albert Roche, Holland College director of athletics and recreation.

"Ryan has been very loyal to our department over the past five years and in our eyes there was no other man for the job," said Roche. "As we continue to grow and develop our women's hockey program, we know Ryan is the man who can help these hockey players bring themselves to the next level."

The ‘Canes women begin training camp with a players meeting Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m.
