It’s go time for the hopefuls at the Charlottetown Islanders training camp as on-ice practices begin today in Pownal.

Group A practice begins at 9 a.m., followed by a Group B practice at 11 a.m.

The first inter-squad game  goes today at 6 p.m.

On Monday, the club held fitness testing in Charlottetown.

Week 1 for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League club’s training sessions will feature daily practices, three inter-squad games and two exhibition games.

The first inter-squad game game goes today at 6 p.m.

Practices begin at 9 a.m. each day and are open to the public. Inter-squad games go at 6 p.m.

The Islanders’ training camp roster includes 30 forwards, 12 defencemen and five goalies vying for spots on the 2014-15 squad.

There are several battles to watch.

Mason McDonald, a second-round pick of the Calgary Flames at June’s NHL entry draft, is the incumbent goalie, so there’s a four-way fight for backup.

On defence, four spots appear solidified so a third pairing and one to two reserve slots could be available.

The battle royale is at forward where likely nine of 12 starting positions are taken.

It means 21 players will be scratching and clawing for what’s probably six spots, at least to start the season.

Numbers can increase or dwindle depending on which players must return to Quebec for school and how many and how long NHL-drafted or invited players will be at NHL camps in September.

Charlottetown plays its first pre-season game against the Moncton Wildcats on Friday, Aug. 15, in Moncton then hosts the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Saturday, Aug. 16, in Pownal.

Game time is 3 p.m.
