Gentile leads Islanders over Screaming Eagles

ABRAM-VILLAGE, P.E.I. – Sydney, N.S., native Derek Gentile had the game-winning goal and an assist to help the Charlottetown Islanders beat his hometown Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 4-1 Sunday at the Evangeline Recreation Centre.

It was the final pre-season game for both Quebec Major Junior Hockey League squads, who will start the regular season Friday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre.

Cole Edwards at even strength and power-play goals by Brett Budgell and Sam King (empty-net goal) accounted for the Islanders scoring. Defenceman Colin Van Den Hurk had two assists while singles went to Zachary Beauregard, Lukas Cormier, Nikita Alexandrov and Thomas Casey.

Brooklyn Kalmikov scored midway through the third period on the power play for the Screaming Eagles. Declan Smith and Ian Smallwood had the assists.

Matthew Welsh made 20 saves for the win while William Grimard made 18 saves in the loss.

Charlottetown, which held 1-0 and 2-0 period leads, went 2-for-6 on the power play and killed seven of eight Screaming Eagles man advantages.

Charlottetown improved to 4-1-1-0 while Cape Breton fell to 3-2-0-0.
