Matt Carter is going to be a Panther again.
The former UPEI sniper has signed with the Nottingham Panthers of the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League.
The 28-year-old forward from Mississauga, Ont., played the past two seasons with Rapaces de Gap in the Ligue Magnus, winning the French championship in 2015.
He amassed 69 goals and 144 points in 111 games with UPEI before turning pro in 2012. He had stints in Cincinnati, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Elmira and Fort Wayne in the ECHL.
Nottingham head coach Corey Neilson is hoping Carter’s relationship with forward Chris Lawrence, which dates back to their childhood, will bear fruit for the club next season.
“We’ve had chemistry between players in glimpses in the past but last year we really saw it between Stephen Schultz and Andy Bohmbach and I wanted to build and grow on it again this year,” Neilson said.
“So with ‘Larry’ and Matt very much on the same page, plus the added enthusiasm for Matt, as all the reports are on the lines of him being highly skilled, having great hands and being very good in front of the net . . . it made a lot of sense to get him into Panthers’ roster.”
Former UPEI captain Mason Wilgosh and UNB’s Taylor MacDougall, son of Varsity Reds head coach Gardiner MacDougall from Bedeque, signed with the Edinburgh Capitals in the same league.
