SUMMERSIDE – Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals’ fans will have the opportunity to check out a new player this week.
Chris Chaddock, who played with the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season, will make his Caps’ debut on Saturday. The Caps will host the Campbellton Tigers in a 7 p.m. start at Eastlink Arena.
“He’s a good experienced 20-year-old player who has a lot of skill,” said Capitals head coach Billy McGuigan in describing Chaddock. “He’s a small forward who’s fast, and he works real hard. That’s a couple of key components that we like and look for.
“He’s going to be a big addition for our hockey club.”
Chaddock, a five-foot-seven and 175-pound centre, recorded 28 points – 13 goals and 15 assists – in 40 games with the Islanders last season.
Chaddock, who is a Saint John, N.B., native, is not new to the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) as he registered nine points in 14 games with the St. Stephen Aces during the 2014-15 season.
The Capitals acquired Chaddock’s MHL rights from the Aces on Nov. 8 in exchange for the rights to defenceman Matt Templeman, a sixth-round pick in the 2019 draft and future considerations.
The Capitals, who passed on their two territorial picks in the 2017 draft and received an extra pick at the end of the second and third rounds, took Templeman with their first extra selection.
Race for second
Although Saturday will be the first game in 14 days for both the Caps and Tigers, it is an important one.
The Capitals, who are 15-11-1-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses), are in a three-way race for second place in the Eastlink North Division. The Caps currently sit fourth, but are only one point back of both the Tigers (15-11-2-0) and Miramichi Timberwolves (14-10-2-2).
