Teenagers from a variety of club hockey teams will be wearing their school colours next month.
There are 16 teams (nine boys and seven girls) playing in the third annual Bluefield Friendship High School Hockey Tournament from April 1 to 5.
“I enjoy playing for the school,” said Braden Muttart, a Grade 12 student at Bluefield.
The North River West Masonry midget A Flames goalie said it is a great opportunity to play with his classmates and added school spirit is on full display during the tournament.
“It’s nerve wracking, but it’s kind of cool,” said the 18-year-old Springvale resident.
The Bobcats made it to the final last year, losing to Kinkora 3-2 in a shootout, and Muttart said hopefully they win the championship this season.
The tournament’s major sponsors are Co-op Energy and Esso.
Kevin Curry, regional manager for Co-Op Energy in Prince Edward Island, said it is the company’s second year involved with the tournament.
Curry said the event revitalizes the school spirit with current students and their families.
“Everybody really came together and we were exceptionally happy to be part of it,” he said. “I encourage all family members, friends, community supporters to get out and root for their team.”
Justine Campbell, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Bluefield, enjoyed playing in the tournament the past two seasons. The Rustico North Stars forward said it is a non-aggressive, fast-paced game.
“I wish they would bring back high school hockey altogether,” she said, noting it increases school spirit during the weeklong tournament.
Muttart said he has heard stories from his father from his playing days at Kinkora. He would like to see it brought back, too.
Bluefield Friendship High School Hockey Tournament
When – April 1 to 5.
Where – Tignish, Evangeline, Summerside, Cornwall, Montague and Charlottetown. The championship game will take place Saturday, April 5 at MacLauchlan Arena with the girls final followed by an alumni game and the boys final.
Tickets – Available at each participating school.
