Sam Fioretti had a pair of goals and Ryan Foss picked up three assists as the Acadia Axemen handed the UPEI Panthers a 7-5 defeat in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action at MacLauchlan Arena on Saturday.

Fioretti put the Axemen on the board two minutes into the game before UPEI tied things up on Gabe Guertler’s power play goal at 18:54 of the first period. Assists went to Kameron Kielly and Beau McCue.

Kyle Farrell, on the power play, and Rodney Southam would give Acadia a 3-1 lead by the seven-minute mark of the second period before UPEI closed the gap to one on Darcy Ashley’s power play goal at 14:07.

Acadia responded on another goal by Farrell before UPEI scored back-to-back goals 14 seconds apart – Kielly on the power play, from RT Rice and Ryan MacKinnon, and Filip Rydstrom, from Cody Payne and Brent Andrews.

The Axemen would score one more time before the second period was out as Boston Leier connected on the power play at 17:40.

In the third period, UPEI tied things up again on MacKinnon’s power play goal, from Kielly and McCue before the Axemen put the game away on goals by Owen MacDonald and Fioretti.

Dawson Carty made 26 saves in net for the Axemen while Matt Mahalak stopped 12 shots in net for UPEI.

UPEI outshot Acadia 31-22.
