The St. FX X-Men are Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champs.

Nathan Pancel’s goal two minutes into the third period was the winner Wednesday as the X-Men defeated the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds 5-3 to sweep the best-of-three final.

UNB led 2-0 on goals by Philippe Halley and former UPEI Panthers defenceman Alex Wall but Nathan Chiarlitti scored a power-play goal with 4:20 left in the first period.

Adam Stevens scored with the man advantage eight minutes into the second period to tie the contest.

Christopher Clappert put UNB back ahead two minutes later, but the lead was short lived. Chiarlitti scored his second of the game a minute later.

Michael Clarke scored with 19 seconds remaining to round out the scoring.

Drew Owsley made 25 saves for the win while Etienne Marcoux stopped 33 shots in the loss.

Both teams advance to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s University Cup taking place in Halifax from March 17 to 20.

It is the X-Men's second AUS title with the first coming in 2003-04.
