Two Charlottetown Islanders draft picks were selected as territorial picks Monday by Maritime Hockey League teams.

Forward Keith Getson was taken by the Bridgewater Lumberjacks while defenceman Duncan McKie was picked by the Valley Wildcats.

Getson was a third-round pick of the Islanders in the May 31 draft while McKie was a fourth-round pick in 2013 draft.

“He’s Charlottetown’s property, so it’s a bit of a gamble, but we feel if he’s going to play junior A hockey, we want him here in the Valley,” Wildcats coach Nick Greenough told the Kings County Advertiser and Register newspapers. “Duncan has a very physical presence you don’t see much in hockey anymore.”

McKie turned some heads at last year’s Islanders training camp.

“We need this kid just to get a little bit better at skating and we could have one heck of a prospect,” general manager Grant Sonier told fans at a year-end gathering.

The Summerside Western Capitals did not make a territorial selection. They are hosting the entry draft Saturday and will receive compensatory picks after the second and third rounds by not making a territorial selection.
