Hernewood Intermediate School claimed three team titles Wednesday during the 2017 Zone 1 Source for Sports Cross Country Running Championships.

Hernewood had the top teams in the bantam boys, bantam girls and intermediate boys categories.

Alberton Elementary School’s Bella Lewis, had the largest margin of victory, winning the pre-novice girls’ race with 42 seconds to spare. Jarvis McRae from M.E. Callaghan had a 34-second cushion in the bantam boys race and Savannah Perry from Bloomfield won the novice girls race by 31 seconds.

This year’s meet attracted 293 runners from 11 schools. All schools from Evangeline west, with the exception of Westisle, were represented.

Two schools, École Évangeline and St. Louis, tied for the team title in the pre-novice girls category.

Other team titles went to Ellerslie for pre-novice boys, Bloomfield for novice girls, Alberton for novice boys and M.E. Callaghan for intermediate girls.

Meet manager Paul Goguen said the weather co-operated and the runners were able to master three demanding courses on a generally sunny day.

The top five teams, as well as the top 20 individual runners in each category, qualify for the provincial cross-country championships which will be held on the same Mill River courses on Saturday, Oct. 21.
