The Charlottetown Boys and Girls Club Celebrity Golf Classic will take place July 21 at Fox Meadow Golf Course. About $700,000 has been raised to support the club’s programming during the first 22 years of the event.
“There just seems to be a lot of energy and excitement around it,” organizer Trent Birt sad of this year’s classic.
Some of this year’s news celebrities include former NHLers Ric Nattress and Chris Nilan. They join a group of past and present NHLers like David Clarkson, Troy Crowder, Mike McPhee, Doug Bodger, Dennis Bonvie, Rick Bowness, Gordie Dwyer, Darren Langdon, Gerard (Turk) Gallant, Doug MacLean, Dave Cameron, Forbes Kennedy and referee Gord Dwyer.
Bruce Guthro will host the music component of the event, which Clarkson has called the “golden nugget.
“It is something you don’t get anywhere else,” he said.
Cisco is the presenting sponsor of the classic, which features a shotgun start beginning at noon with the concert taking place following the golf. It had been held the night before in previous years. Birt said it would have a kitchen party feel with professional lighting and sound.
“It’s a real social time,” Birt said of the daylong event. “It starts at breakfast and it’s going to be fun until after the concert.”
The celebrities, who get matched with a team of golfers, all donate their time for the event.
“All for the Boys and Girls Club,” Birt said.
“It’s always nice to find an excuse to get to P.E.I.,” Guthro said. “When it’s for kids, it’s just a bonus. The committee runs a fantastic tournament filled with laughter and fun. I do my best to never miss it.”
There are only a few team spots remaining to fill out the field of 36. Anyone interested in registering a team can contact the club at 902-892-1817.
