SUMMERSIDE – It was an impressive start to the regular season for two Summerside teams on Friday night.
The Summerside Waterwise Spartans opened the 2018 P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League with a 63-0 victory over the Kings County Steelers, and the Summerside Cooke Insurance Clippers topped the Souris Wildcats 45-0 in the P.E.I. Varsity Tackle Football League. Both games were played on a beautiful night for football before good crowds at Eric Johnston Field.
The two Summerside teams are on the road Friday as they visit the Cornwall Timberwolves at the Terry Fox Sports Complex. The bantam game will start at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 8 p.m.
Clippers 45 Wildcats 0
Summerside's defence was dominant all night, limiting the Wildcats’ net offence to negative yards and recording two defensive safeties and giving the Clippers’ offence a short field all night.
The Clippers were led on offence by senior running back Caleb Dawson and rookie running back Mike Friesen, who both scored two rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Nic Gunning rushed for a major score, and Dexter Stewart scored a touchdown on a punt return.
Spartans 63 Steelers 0
Spartans running back Kieran Arsenault let the offensive attack with four rushing touchdowns and a kickoff return for a score.
Wide receiver Zachary Blood had three scores while rookie running back Sam Friesen chipped in with one touchdown. Arsenault also converted seven of nine converts, which are worth two points in bantam football.
