CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The UPEI Panthers’ string of clean sheets ended Sunday in a 3-0 defeat to the Cape Breton Capers in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s soccer action in Charlottetown.

CBU striker Marcum Campanile headed the opening score just two minutes into the game and set things going. But it was late second-half goals by Daniel Williams (74th minute) and Campanile that did the Panthers in.

For Panthers head coach Lewis Page the loss was a numbers game.

“Any time you play a team with that quality, and they are defending national champions for a reason, you know you’re under the gun for the whole game and you can’t let one goal become two,” Page said. “So our inexperience showed a little bit in the second half when they scored the second one and then the third one right after. Overall we were good in possession and our defending was good for 95 per cent of the game, but against a side of that quality that five per cent kills you.

Panther keeper Brett Strba took the loss.

UPEI dropped to 1-1-2 while Cape Breton upped it mark to 3-0-1.

The women’s Panthers suffered the same fate Sunday, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Capers.

Ali Muise suffered the loss, while Rachel Yerxa earned the clean sheet.
