A trio of Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders is in St. John’s, N.L., chasing a national baseball championship with the Chatham Ironmen.

Catcher Morgan MacLean and pitchers Brody McDonald and Jordan Stevenson were picked up along with five Fredericton Royals for the nationals.

The Ironmen begin play this morning at 9:30 a.m.

“It’s an honour to be asked to come away with them,” McDonald said Wednesday after arriving in St. John’s. “I think we have a pretty good team. We have lots of pitching, pretty good defence and a lot of power, so it should be a fun week.”

McDonald led the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League (NBSBL) in earned-run average (1.35) this season while compiling a 4-0 record in 13 games.

Stevenson was 5-4 with a 2.13 ERA in 13 games, while MacLean was the Islanders’ top hitter with a .333 batting average in 29 games.

This is the first senior championship for McDonald and MacLean while Stevenson was with the Ironmen last year in Windsor, Ont. The Ironmen went 3-2 in 2013.

Ironmen officials talked to the three of them earlier this season about their interest in them for nationals.

“To be called up by any team is great, especially this team with the talent we have, I think we should have a good chance,” MacLean said.

Having the other two Islanders on the team made it easier to transition to the new club, he added.

“It’s good to have those guys to help mesh with the rest of the guys.”

The last time MacLean was picked up for a national tournament was with Summerside when they hosted the peewee championship. Summerside also picked up McDonald that year.

The Island players went to Chatham, N.B., Tuesday night for practice.

They left for the Halifax airport Wednesday at 4 a.m. and arrived in St. John’s around noon.

The NBSBL playoff schedule was announced Wednesday.

The fourth-place Islanders (13-19) will host the five-place Hub City Brewers (11-21) Thursday, Aug. 28, in Game 1 of best-of-five quarter-final.

Game 2 is Aug. 29 in Moncton followed Game 3 in Charlottetown on Aug. 31.

Games 4 and 5, if needed, will be played Sept. 1 in Moncton and Sept. 3 in Charlottetown.

All games are 7:30 p.m. starts.
