Baseball Canada likes what it sees on the diamonds across the country’s smallest province.

For the second time in three years, Prince Edward Island won the Baseball Canada province of the year award Saturday in Saskatoon, Sask.

“It was a bit of a surprise, but what an honour,” said Randy Byrne, Baseball P.E.I. executive director. “This award is a credit to everybody who has had any involvement with baseball on P.E.I. The game’s in good shape, and its future is bright on PEI.”

Baseball Canada credited P.E.I. with placing first in coaching development, second in umpire development and delivering grassroots programs in 2015. In August, the Charlottetown Royals won bronze at the under-15 national championship. It was the province’s first medal at a Canadian championship since 1977.

The province also saw membership increase from 1,445 in 2014 to 1,756 in 2015.

“We must be doing something right,” declared Don LeClair, president of Baseball P.E.I. “This is truly is terrific.”
