P.E.I. baseball team defeats Newfoundland at Canada Games

WINNIPEG, MAN. – Patrick Young, Josh Myers and Ben MacDougall each had two hits as P.E.I. defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 8-2 Tuesday at the Canada Games men’s baseball competition in Winnipeg.

Logan MacDougall and Dylan Noonan both added singles.

P.E.I. scored deuces in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings while Newfoundland countered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Josh Myers threw two innings of relief for the victory. He allowed two runs on three walks. Max Benton started and limit Newfoundland to one hit in three innings while Nathan Jones struck out five in to innings to end the game.

P.E.I. (2-3) plays Nova Scotia on Thursday for seventh place.

Men's softball

P.E.I. dropped a pair of games Tuesday to fall to 3-5 at the Canada Games softball tournament.

Newfoundland and Labrador defeated P.E.I. 9-1 while Quebec won 10-1.

Avery Arsenault and Sam Walsh had the Island’s lone hits against Newfoundland.

Logan Gallant took the loss, giving up eight runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Walsh went 2-for-2 against Quebec while Arsenault and Matt Lange each added one.

Jonathan Arsenault was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits.

P.E.I. finishes the round robin today with a game against Saskatchewan (8-0) at 1 p.m. Atlantic.

Women’s basketball

Newfoundland and Labrador went on a 14-0 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to defeat P.E.I. 89-79 in a women’s basketball placing game.

Nikki Arsenault led P.E.I. with 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals while Lexi MacInnis added 21 points. Devon Lawlor and Ashley Plaggenhoeff both contributed 10 points.

The Island squad led 23-11 after the first quarter, 43-26 at the half and 65-49 heading to the fourth.

P.E.I. plays Yukon Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Atlantic
