Luc Vautour hit a walk-off three-run home run Sunday as the Moncton Mets defeated the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders 6-5.
It was the Islanders’ third loss in two days and stretched the team’s losing streak to seven games in New Brunswick Senior Baseball League action. Charlottetown has not won since a 4-1 victory over Hub City on July 8.
The streak looked to be over Sunday in Moncton, N.B., as the Islanders led 5-1 going to the bottom of the seventh.
Dylan McKenna, who replaced Brody McDonald to start the inning, gave up three hits and a walk before Vautour finished the game in dramatic fashion.
The loss dropped the Islanders to 10-15 while the Mets (14-8) moved to within a game of first-place Fredericton (16-8).
A day after being shutout twice in Chatham, N.B., the Islanders struck early on Sunday.
They opened the scoring in the first inning off a Morgan MacLean single, followed by a walk and Moncton starter Joel Mendez hitting two batters to force in the first run of the game.
McDonald gave up two hits through the first five innings before Charlottetown struck for four runs in the sixth, keyed by RBI singles by Jordan Duffy and Will Connolly.
The Mets got one back in the sixth off McDonald, who allowed three hits in six innings of work.
