Islanders McDonald records win for Fredericton at nationals

VICTORIA, B.C. – Clyde River’s Brody McDonald recorded the win Thursday as the Fredericton Royals opened the Canadian senior men’s baseball championship by thumping Manitoba 16-4 in Victoria, B.C.

The six-foot-one lefty allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out one in a game shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.

The Royals, who have picked up 11 players from the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League including the Charlottetown Gaudet's Auto Body Islanders McDonald, scored four times in the first inning and opened up a 9-0 lead after two innings. Manitoba scored once in the third and three more in the fifth.

Dave Barr was 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBI to pace the Royals offence.

New Brunswick plays the host squad at 11 p.m. Atlantic and Tecumseh, Ont., Friday at 10 p.m.
