OSHAWA, Ont. — The Holland College Hurricanes are 1-1 after day one at the Canadian College National Invitational Baseball Championship.

The Hurricanes dropped a 4-1 decision to the host Durham Lords Friday night after pounding the Abbot Islanders earlier in the day 17-0.

In the nighcap, back-to-back doubles in the third inning gave Durham all the runs they would need, and a 2-0 lead. The Lords would add two more runs in the fourth inning.

Nerves got a little frayed in the fourth as Hurricanes first baseman Kyle Donahoe was ejected by the home plate umpire after the first two Hurricanes struck out.

The Hurricanes got on the board in the sixth inning as Jay Oram, the Hurricanes played of the game, drove in Dillon Doucette. The Hurricanes would load the bases but failed to score.

A win would have guaranteed the Hurricanes a berth in the semifinal. Holland College plays today at 1 p.m. against Fanshawe. The cross overs and championship game go Sunday.

Hurricanes 17, Abbot 0

Brady Arsenault and Porter Smith combined on a no-hitter as the Hurricanes pounded the Abbott Islanders 17-0 in the opening game Friday.

Arsenault threw four innings while Smith tossed one inning.

Josh MacDonald was named player of the game for the Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes took a 1-0 lead after Ryne MacIsaac doubled to score Dom Ryan who reached on a walk with one out in the first inning. The ‘Canes had a 2-0 lead after the first inning on RBI’s by MacIsaac and Dillon Doucette.

Arsenault would follow that up with three strikeouts in the bottom half of the inning.

The ‘Canes stretched their lead to 4-0 in the third inning thanks to some shaky Abbot defence. The Islanders threatened to score in their half of the third inning but the ‘Canes shut things down with some solid defence.

An offensive explosion in the fourth inning essentially put the game away, giving the ‘Canes a 14-0 lead but Holland College wasn’t through.

MacDonald slammed a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the ‘Canes up 17-0.

Smith came in to mop up after that.
