Sports revealed for 2023 Canada Winter Games

CHARLOTTETOWN - The Canada Games Council announced the final sports and disciplines on Monday for the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I.

The list includes 25 core sports. New this year are women’s boxing and mixed doubles curling, and the host committee can chose one sport from a short list of four (karate, table tennis, fencing, target shooting).
The CGC’s sport committee analyzed sports and disciplines wishing to be included in 2023. The sports/disciplines selected for the Games are based on a participant quota each Games must follow.
Tom Quinn, CGC chair, said the council had to whittle down the requests for inclusion.
“The Canada Games play a vital role in the growth of Canadian sport and have evolved to the point where more sports vie for inclusion than any specific Games could possibly include,” said Quinn in a release. “The Canada Games looks forward to continuing to build great partnerships among the governing bodies of the sports on the program as we plan towards the 2023 Canada Games.”
The CGC’s sport selection process included a core sport review after the 2015 Canada Winter Games, and an assessment process to determine the final sport program for 2023.
The review is designed to keep core sports aligned with the mission, vision and values of the Canada Games and the Canadian sport system.
Core sports generally meet the goals of the Canada Games sport program. It accounts for up to 70 per cent of the overall Games quota.
The assessment sport selection process identify sports that meet most of the Games sport program goals, but lack in some areas which don’t allow it to achieve core status.
It gives sports not previously on the sport program a chance to be selected. It selects the remaining 30 per cent of the Games quota.
