Islanders earn hard-fought pre-season win over Wildcats

The Charlottetown Islanders sprung out to a five-goal lead and gutted out a 7-5 win over the Moncton Wildcats in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season action Sunday in Cornwall. 

Charlottetown led 6-1 on goals by Kameron Kielly (2), Daniel Sprong (2), Oliver Cooper and Julien Avon late in the second period before Moncton's Kyle Tibbo made things 6-2 at the end of the frame.

But in the third period, Moncton goals by Alexandre Jacob, Benji Curtis and Lane Cormier sandwiched an Isles marker by Spenser Cobbold to bring the score to 7-5 with almost two minutes remaining.

Mason McDonald and Chase Marchand shared time in the Islanders goal while Alex Dubeau and Alex Kelly were in the Moncton net.

Charlottetown outshot Moncton 41-36 and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Moncton was 2-for-7 with the extra man.

The Islanders upped its preseason record to 2-2 while Moncton dropped to 2-2. Islanders training camp continues today.

Charlottetown's next pre-season game is Friday, Sept. 5, versus the Sea Dogs in Saint John, N.B.
