Paul Jelley’s friends and family are organizing a memorial golf tournament in his honour, with proceeds in support of KidSport P.E.I.

The Paul Jelley Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sunday, July 13, at the Glen Afton Golf Club. Sign-in starts at noon and the shotgun start is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Organizers have started to receive registrations and are hoping to have all teams and individuals registered by June 30.

Paul Jelley was an elite goaltender for various hockey teams including the junior Islanders and UPEI Panthers. Jelley attended the Toronto Maple Leaf’s training camp when there were only 14 NHL teams.

He later served as head coach junior and minor hockey teams, a goaltender coach, and founder of a goaltending school.

“We know Paul would be happy to have his memorial tournament benefit KidSport P.E.I.,” said his widow, Lorraine Jelley. “He shared KidSport’s beliefs that sport is a great way to promote physical activity and to help children develop important life skills. We’ll have a fun tournament and a great day.”

Jelley served in various executive roles within the P.E.I. sports community, including president of Hockey P.E.I. and Sport P.E.I. He also served in the finance, development and technology, and agriculture portfolios as deputy minister for two provincial governments. He retired from the provincial government in 2009, and passed away that November. UPEI bestowed a distinguished alumni award, posthumously, to Jelley in 2010.
