The Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball championship is moving to Halifax in 2015.
The conference announced Monday it has decided to host the Subway AUS women’s championship at the same time and venue as the men’s tournament at the Halifax Metro Centre.
It will be a pilot project for 2015 after being raised by the AUS scheduling committee.
“Our thinking here is that this will not only help to elevate the profile of AUS women’s basketball, but it will bring a whole new dimension to this event and better both the student-athlete and the fan experience,” said executive director Phil Currie.
While there remains a lot of logistics to be worked out, Currie told The Guardian, the change would mean starting the tournament on Thursday as opposed to the current Friday structure.
The men’s championship has been hosted in Halifax for years while the women’s championship has rotated around the conference. UPEI is hosting this year’s women’s event from March 7 to 9.
The conference also set the 2014 fall championship sites.
Saint Mary’s will host cross-country on Oct. 25; Acadia women's rugby from Oct. 24 to 26; Memorial men’s soccer and Dalhousie women’s soccer. Both soccer championships will take place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.
