Ryan MacKinnon was the Rimouski Oceanic captain in 2013-14.

The Charlottetown Islanders have acquired Summerside defenceman Ryan MacKinnon in a trade with the Rimouski Oceanic, sources have told The Guardian.

Deals cannot be officially announced until Friday, May 30.

Going to Rimouski is the third of the Islanders’ three first-round picks (16th overall) and a fifth-round pick in 2015. The Isles still have the 12 and 15 selection in this year’s first round.

MacKinnon, 19, had four goals and 18 assists in 66 games this season as Rimouski’s captain. The five-foot-11, 193-pound blue-liner will be an overager in 2014-15.

Charlottetown did not dress a captain after Jack Nevins was dealt at the trade deadline in January.

MacKinnon has played three seasons in Rimouski since being drafted in the fifth round in 2011.

They are also giving a first rd pick to Victoriaville for Ross Johnston I don't understand this so the Islanders will have 6 over agers coming to camp this summer if they are all invited back hope this works out.

Don't know much about this kid but can someone tell me why The Islanders would trade a 1st rd draft pick for an overage player. For a team rebuilding it doesn't make sense.
