EDITOR:

The June 29 edition of The Guardian, featuring colour photos and story on a so-called drag queen, left me wondering why this subject would warrant full, front-page coverage. I mean, this is something you would more likely see in a tabloid at the checkout counter of your grocery store.

Is the Guardian otherwise that hard up for news, or might there be some kind of pressing social need to be served here, like trying to promote more understanding and acceptance of those who are “different?” A couple of months ago The Guardian had an item about a real live drag queen doing a presentation for children at the Confederation Library. For my part, though, when I open the paper each day I’m expecting more substantive news stories.
