However, on most school days the bike lane in front of Queen Charlotte School is blocked with parents pulling in and out of the bike lane, dropping off their children.
This makes for a dangerous situation for anyone trying to use the bike lane. To avoid the parked cars we have to pull into traffic, slowing down all the other cars on North River Road. This can lead to cars trying to sneak by, squeezing us between a moving car on the left, and the cars parked in the bike lane on our right.
It also places us at risk of being "doored" by someone opening the door of their car while parked in the bike lane, or of being hit by cars pulling out of the bike lane that forget to check their blind spot for cyclists. It would be wonderful if Charlottetown placed "No Parking" signs in front of Queen Charlotte and the Simmons parking lot, as they have on other portions of North River Road.
In the meantime, it would be terrific, if this school year, parents could park in the Simmons lot while dropping off their kids and during after-school events. It might add a minute to your commute, but it will dramatically increase the safety of those of us in the bike lane.
