I have long wanted to write a letter regarding the term storm chips. I first heard this term during the now infamous winter of 2015 on CBC Radio. I wondered at the time, if there really was a bag of chips called storm chips. Maybe there is. I buy chips so infrequently, I wouldn’t know. (They do). When I do buy, it is a 50 cent, tiny little bag.

Now having said all that, I will note here that I saw in Rick MacLean's recent column, the term storm chips. From first hearing it, I have wondered why people think they have to stock up on snack foods, or worse still, junk foods when a storm is pending.

I have an emergency kit with 5, 1.5 litre bottles of water and keep two large jugs of boiled water in the fridge at all times. (I'm leery of tap water.) Also in the kit, are cans of smoked oysters and packages of tuna and crackers.

Well, maybe the caloric and fat count is a little higher than I would normally eat. But it is short term. So getting back to junk food as I call it, I believe our society is obese enough without being encouraged to eat storm chips. I know, I know, I sound like Scrooge at Christmas. Just have too much time on my hands due to the cold weather keeping me from my daily walks.
