EDITOR:

As we all know, Canada is a multicultural and immigrant country. The hospitality of the Canadian people is deeply attractive to people from all over the world. People who are from China call Canada a ‘nice’ country. If you walk around Vancouver, what you see the most are Asian faces because about 21 per cent people in the city are ethnic Chinese now.

Many Chinese choose to immigrate to Canada and study in Canada. As a Chinese international student, what I care most about is the recognition of people from other countries. In fact, it is a great thing that more and more people can recognize the culture and history of your country.

The Canadian parliament passed a Spring Festival motion last year, so it means our spring festival customs and culture is recognized, even though some people may think this is a meaningless decision because there is no specific holiday for this festival.

In China, Feb. 16 is the day of Spring Festival. As an international student, this is my second year in Canada. In other words, the Spring Festival makes many of us homesick. Well, maybe one day we can have the specific holiday for our Spring Festival, and we could go back to our hometown with our family members to spend this special holiday together. But on the one hand, this year I proudly introduced our Spring Festival to students from other countries because I also felt a sense of belonging in Canada.

Xunan Fang,

UPEI student from China
