EDITOR:
I thought it was proper to attend the meeting on electoral boundaries, curious as to how our political masters are going to divide up the constituencies in anticipation of the MMP electoral model becoming a reality.
The turnout was disappointing, perhaps 60 people more or less. Certainly not the numbers one would hope to see. In attendance were the five members of the committee as well as four well-known members of the legislature, the premier, the Stratford mayor and several politically active people. Clearly not much interest from the public.
At best, there was about 20 John Q. Publics present. A clear message as to the public interest in governance. Even if you were interested in attending the meeting, it was not an easy task. To begin with it was a miserable evening, cold, icy and not a good night to be driving. Secondly, the session was held in the MacKinnon Theatre at the Holland College Campus. Signage was minimal and the theatre is deep in the bowels of the campus. The place is like a maze.
It didn’t take long to understand that the task here is to get ’er done by March 1 so that the government can call a fast election, before any concerned citizens can pull together any form of opposition to the ruling party. I hope John Q Public can get his or her act together. If not, the ruling elite will try to reduce our rights to the point of no return.
