EDITOR:
What shame and embarrassment all Islanders should feel for the treatment of immigrants based on what was a very obvious error on the immigration form. These people arrived after a long flight to a strange country and many of them did not even speak the language.
According to my recollection, the immigration form in Florida asks for your address for your first night. When it takes a length of time to establish permanent address, it should be obvious that most newcomers do not have one. The person meeting them gave their own address because it was necessary to complete the form so very tired people could get to a bed, and if the newcomers needed to be contacted they could direct them to their whereabouts.
To criminally accuse people, based on the obvious error on a form is shameful and I hope newcomers know most Islanders understand and disapprove of this wrongful rush to judgement.
