EDITOR:

I just wanted to add my name to the list of people “happy” about abortion being available on the Island. Because, let’s not fool ourselves, these abortions would take place regardless. Criminalizing abortions or restricting the access does not stop abortion; it just makes it more dangerous for the woman. Abortion rates do not go down when abortion is restricted, they just become less safe. I am happy women on P.E.I. now have the same legal choice that women have across Canada.

Calling fetuses “pre-born” is inflammatory and inaccurate. These are not babies, they are not children. It is in no way comparable to traffic accidents which kill a living, breathing, sentient being.

The argument that feminists should care about the pre-born because statistically half of them are female is also ridiculous. First of all, it implies that feminists only care about women, which I assure you as a feminist and mom of a son, is not true. It’s also neglecting the fact that 100 per cent of the people having abortions are women. These “post-borns” are the one I want to I want to support, not the theoretical “pre-borns.”

There is so much more I could say about this letter, but I will leave it at this; yes, I am happy. Anytime women are afforded their legal right to determine their own reproductive future, I will celebrate that fact.

Megan Dorrell,

Charlottetown
